dd977b0ffa If pdfxmltex bombs, as it so often does, at least cause the build to 
come to a halt rather than just hanging.

104ccad880 Build the .ps/.pdf documentation by default when doing 'make dist'. 
Because this means installing lots of XML processing tools and
supporting gunk, there is a hack at the top of docs/Makefile.am for
disabling the .pdf/.ps build.

d0aac31dac Make it more obvious if something fails when making HTML or PS/PDF docs. 
Also put the output of all pfdxmltex runs in the logfile, not just the
last run's output.

00c4434760 I think && might be a better statement-joiner than ; -- the pdfxmltex 
runs can easily die silently.

61448c507d We have a nice little collection of text files describing various high 
level things.  But they're all over the place.  This commits moves
them all to the new docs/internals/ directory, and gives them 
a consistent naming scheme.

fbf8653c8b Removed the remnants of the attempt at an ARM port, because it had 
bit-rotted badly and was clogging up the code.

I put the useful remnants in docs/porting-to-ARM in case anyone ever
wants to try porting to ARM again.

f6ce991fe4 Fix PS/PDF generation somewhat; the Makefile syntax errors are now 
fixed, although latex now runs out of memory when doing it.

7a75a9f583 Overhauled the docs. Removed all the HTML files, put in XML files as 
converted by Donna.  Hooked it into the build system so they are only
built when specifically asked for, and when doing "make dist".

They're not perfect;  in particular, there are the following problems:
- The plain-text FAQ should be built from FAQ.xml, but this is not
  currently done.  (The text FAQ has been left in for now.)

- The PS/PDF building doesn't work -- it fails with an incomprehensible
  error message which I haven't yet deciphered.

Nonetheless, I'm putting it in so others can see it.

0db27515b1 Putting "dist_" in front of a "_DATA" variable means it is included in "make 
dist".  This avoids the need to put it in "EXTRA_DIST", and saves a few lines
in all the docs Makefile.am files.

5fd0ef7ca3 Just call me Mr Brain-Dead Moron. Move the documentation sources to 
where I _should_ have put them in the first place, and fix up the
Makefile.am's accordingly.  'make' and 'make install' now work.
