0d30686d21 When searching for global public symbols (like for the somalloc
synonym symbols), exclude the dynamic (runtime) linker as it is very
special.

8b4dd5c47c BZ#355188 valgrind should intercept all malloc related global functions.
This implements the interception of all globally public allocation
functions by default. It works by adding a flag to the spec to say the
interception only applies to global functions. Which is set for the
somalloc spec. The librarypath to match is set to "*" unless the user
overrides it. Then each DiSym keeps track of whether the symbol is local
or global. For a spec which has isGlobal set only isGlobal symbols will
match.

Note that because of padding to keep the addresses in DiSym aligned the
addition of the extra bool isGlobal doesn't actually grow the struct.
The comments explain how the struct could be made more compact on 32bit
systems, but this isn't as easy on 64bit systems. So I didn't try to do
that in this patch.

For ELF symbols keeping track of which are global is trivial. For pdb I
had to guess and made only the "Public" symbols global. I don't know
how/if macho keeps track of global symbols or not. For now I just mark
all of them local (which just means things work as previously on platforms
that use machos, no non-system symbols are matches by default for somalloc
unless the user explicitly tells which library name to match).

Included are two testcases for shared libraries (wrapmalloc) and staticly
linked (wrapmallocstatic) malloc/free overrides that depend on the new
default. One existing testcase (new_override) was adjusted to explicitly
not use the new somalloc default because it depends on a user defined
new implementation that has side-effects and should explicitly not be
intercepted.

48c0ff5c76 Fix BZ #116002.
Left justification of strings in myvprintf_str was mixed up.
Now fixed and %s formats changed accordingly.
In function myvprintf_int64: the local buffer was not large
enough to hold ULONG_MAX in binary notation. Numbers were
truncated at 39 digits. 
Testcases added.

b519f73307 Adds initial support for AArch64 (arm64) on Android. Small programs
(/system/bin/ls, /system/bin/date) run.  Still to do:

* enable more malloc/free intercepts

* enable wrappers for ashmem and binder syscalls

* check to see if any special ioctl support is required for ARM Mali GPUs

665280aeaf Merge r14202 from the BUF_REMOVAL branch to trunk.
This patch changes the interface and behaviour of VG_(demangle) and
VG_(maybe_Z_demangle). Instead of copying the demangled name into a
fixed sized buffer that is passed in from the caller (HChar *buf, Int n_buf),
the demangling functions will now return a pointer to the full-length
demangled name (HChar **result). It is the caller's responsiblilty to
make a copy if needed. 

This change in function parameters ripples upward
- first: to get_sym_name
- then to the convenience wrappers
  - VG_(get_fnname)
  - VG_(get_fnname_w_offset)
  - VG_(get_fnname_if_entry)
  - VG_(get_fnname_raw)
  - VG_(get_fnname_no_cxx_demangle)
  - VG_(get_datasym_and_offset)

The changes in foComplete then forces the arguments of
  - VG_(get_objname) to be changed as well

There are some issues regarding the ownership and persistence of
character strings to consider.
In general, the returned character string is owned by "somebody else"
which means the caller must not free it. Also, the caller must not 
modify the returned string as it possibly points to read only memory.
Additionally, the returned string is not necessarily persistent. Here are
the scenarios:
- the returned string is a demangled function name in which case the
  memory holding the string will be freed when the demangler is called again.
- the returned string hangs off of a DebugInfo structure in which case
  it will be freed when the DebugInfo is discarded
- the returned string hangs off of a segment in the address space manager
  in which case it may be overwritten when the segment is merged with
  another segment
So the rule of thunb here is: if in doubt strdup the string.

d0dd4cbf30 Change VG_(allocEltDedupPA) to return a pointer to const. The reason is
that once an element has been allocated and added to the pool it must
not be modified afterwards. See the documentation in pub_tool_deduppoolalloc.h
The rest of the patch is ripple.

070ad41c3b Enable -Wcast-qual when compiling the valgrind source.
Testcases are not compiled with -Wcast-qual.
Introduce CONST_CAST macro to work around in the few spots
where a cast that drops type qualifiers is needed.

a584a6773c coregrind files shall use vg_assert not tl_assert.
Tool files shall use tl_assert not vg_assert.
Fix code accordingly.
Adapted check_headers_and_includes to make sure the code
stays clean in that respect.

a3a0be70ab Bug 338615 suppress glibc 2.20 optimized strcmp implementation for ARMv7.
Add an add_hardwired_spec for strcmp in VG_(redir_initialise) for
ld-linux.so.3 and ld-linux-armhf.so.3 to use a simple strcmp
implementation in m_trampoline.S (compiled from the trivial .c code
to asm with gcc like the other implementations in that file).

8e605f14c5 Add option a new sim-hint no-nptl-pthread-stackcache.
Activating this hint using --sim-hints=no-nptl-pthread-stackcache
means the glibc nptl stack cache will be disabled.

Disabling this stack/tls cache avoids helgrind false positive race conditions
errors when using __thread variables.

Note: disabling the stack cache is done by a kludge, dependent on
internal knowledge of glibc code, and using libpthread debug info.
So, this kludge might be broken with newer glibc version.
This has been tested on various platforms and various
glibc versions 2.11, 2.16 and 2.18

To check if the disabling works, you can do:
valgrind --tool=helgrind --sim-hints=no-nptl-pthread-stackcache -d -v ./helgrind/tests/tls_threads |& grep kludge

If you see the below 2 lines, then hopefully the stack cache has been disabled.
--12624-- deactivate nptl pthread stackcache via kludge: found symbol stack_cache_actsize at addr 0x3AF178
--12624:1:sched    pthread stack cache size disabling done via kludge

135719b57e Reduce memory needed for symbols, by having the tocptr and local_ep
(used for ppc64 platforms) #ifdef-ed and accessed by macros
that becomes NOP on non ppc64 platforms.
This decreases the debuginfo memory by about 2.5 Mb on a big 32 bit application.

Note : doing that, some questions were encountered in the way
tocptr and local_ep have (or do not have) to be copied/maintained
in storage.c canonicaliseSymtab

98908947c7 This commit is for Bugzilla 334834. The Bugzilla contains patch 2 of 3
to add PPC64 LE support.  The other two patches can be found in Bugzillas
334384 and 334836.

POWER PC, add the functional Little Endian support, patch 2 

The IBM POWER processor now supports both Big Endian and Little Endian.
The ABI for Little Endian also changes.  Specifically, the function
descriptor is not used, the stack size changed, accessing the TOC
changed.  Functions now have a local and a global entry point.  Register
r2 contains the TOC for local calls and register r12 contains the TOC
for global calls.  This patch makes the functional changes to the
Valgrind tool.  The patch makes the changes needed for the
none/tests/ppc32 and none/tests/ppc64 Makefile.am.  A number of the
ppc specific tests have Endian dependencies that are not fixed in
this patch.  They are fixed in the next patch.

Per Julian's comments renamed coregrind/m_dispatch/dispatch-ppc64-linux.S
to coregrind/m_dispatch/dispatch-ppc64be-linux.S  Created new file for LE
coregrind/m_dispatch/dispatch-ppc64le-linux.S.  The same was done for
coregrind/m_syswrap/syscall-ppc-linux.S.

914f75de32 This commit is for Bugzilla 334384. The Bugzilla contains patch 1 of 3
to add PPC64 LE support.  The other two patches can be found in Bugzillas
334834 and 334836.  The commit does not have a VEX commit associated with it.

POWER PC, add initial Little Endian support

The IBM POWER processor now supports both Big Endian and Little Endian.
This patch renames the #defines with the name ppc64 to ppc64be for the BE
specific code.  This patch adds the Little Endian #define ppc64le to the

Additionally, a few functions are renamed to remove BE from the name if the
function is used by BE and LE. Functions that are BE specific have BE put
in the name.

The goals of this patch is to make sure #defines, function names and
variables consistently use PPC64/ppc64 if it refers to BE and LE,
PPC64BE/ppc64be if it is specific to BE, PPC64LE/ppc64le if it is LE
specific.  The patch does not break the code for PPC64 Big Endian.

The test files memcheck/tests/atomic_incs.c, tests/power_insn_available.c
and tests/power_insn_available.c are also updated to the new #define
definition for PPC64 BE.

35b77cecf7 Improve m_redir.c debug trace by adding filename.
Many objects (shared or non shared) have no soname.
In such case, showing the filename clarifies where the
redir spec is coming from.

e1567da7c5 Extend the behavioural-equivalence-class mechanism for redirection
functions to include the ability to give a priority to each function,
as well as a tag indicating its behavioural class.  Add logic in
m_redir.c to resolve conflicting redirections with the same eclass but
different priorities by preferring the redirection with the higher
priority.  Use all of the above in mc_replace_strmem.c, to cause a
conflict between redirections for "memcpy" and "memcpy@GLIBC_2.2.5" to
be resolved in favour of the latter (the non-overlap-checking
version).

This is all related to the massive swamp that is #275284.

6c61d1be73 Fix for #275284 (initial fix, at least). Will break OSX; fix
to follow.

* add behavioural eclass tags for most functions in
  mc_replace_strmem.c and vg_replace_malloc.c.

* add a wrapper for strspn()  (see bug 270925)

* coregrind/m_redir.c: add logic to use eclass tags for
  resolving conflicting redirections.  Improve debug
  printing in that situation.

* mc_replace_strmem.c: add a wrapper for "__GI___strcasecmp_l".
  Gark.  Is this correct?  Does __GI___strcasecmp_l behave the
  same as __GI_strcasecmp_l and strcasecmp_l ?

be517f6178 Add more infrastructure to be used for fixing #275284 (Valgrind
memcpy/memmove redirection stopped working in glibc 2.14/x86_64), but
don't fix the problem yet.  Should be no end-user visible change.

* in m_redir.c, when processing redirection specifications, consider
  all the names associated with an address, not just the primary name.

* add plumbing to support the notion of "behavioural equivalence class
  tags" of redirect/wrap functions.  These can be used by m_redir to
  resolve some situations in which the available set of redirect
  specifications causes some address to get redirected to two
  different functions.  (Framework is in place, but such resolution is
  not implemented yet.)

a043f0a060 Remove the assumption, in m_debuginfo, that each address is associated
with only one symbol.  Instead, allow an address to have arbitrarily
many names.  This reflects reality better, particularly for systemy
libraries such as glibc and ld.so, and is background work needed for
fixing #275284.  This is not in itself a fix for #275284.  A followup
commit to un-break compilation on OSX will follow shortly.

a31f76b8fc handle_maybe_load_notifier: assert when symbol == NULL rather than
