d1bad49f00 Only use VKI_O_LARGEFILE on platforms where it exists. This
unbreaks the build breakage on Darwin introduced in r11397, which
was a fix for #234064.  The breakage was subsequently reported
in #253420 and #253452, which this commit fixes.

c72198e061 When opening an mmaped file to see if it's an ELF file that we should
read debuginfo from, use VKI_O_LARGEFILE, so as to ensure the open
succeeds for large files on 32-bit systems.  Fixes #234064.

0bb6f49531 On arm-linux, add r7 to the set of registers that the CFI unwinder
knows how to unwind.  This is important when unwinding Thumb code
the CFA is often stated as being at some offset from r7.

448fa2462a search_all_symtabs: when mapping addresses to text symbols, consider
any symbol in the r-x mapped segment to be a valid candidate.  This
relaxes the filtering criterion slightly, makes it consistent with
other is-it-text? checks.  Some addresses which before didn't get
mapped to anything are now correctly mapped to "vtable for Foo"
symbols.

5686e8d89d Try to find the PDB file for a given PE file by the totally kludgey
method of doing "strings file.dll | egrep '\.pdb|\.PDB'".

Distantly derived from a patch by leiz@ucla.edu.  Fixes #222902,
although I still would prefer to do this the proper way, by parsing
the PE file properly.

69944232f8 PE/PDB handling: allow the PDB (the debuginfo file) to be up to 1
minute older than the PE (the .exe/.dll it describes) even though this
doesn't seem particularly safe.  Partially fixes #190675.

6bc7295264 Make the Dwarf3 CFI stack unwinding machinery work on arm-linux
too.  This is a first step towards making not be completely
x86/amd64-linux specific, and so replaces some x86/amd64-specific
stuff with more general constructions:

* structure 'DiCfSI', into which the info is summarised, has been
  made target-specific (ugh), since the sets of registers to be
  unwound differ on different targets.

* enum CfiReg and the CFIC_ constants have been expanded
  accordingly, to handle both arm and x86/amd64 registers.

  The abbreviation "IA" (Intel Architecture) has been used in a
  few places where the x86 and amd64 definitions are shared.

* the CFI reader/summariser in readdwarf.c has been expanded &
  generalised appropriately.

* the DiCfSI evaluator in debuginfo.c, VG_(use_CFI_info), has
  also been generalised appropriately.

  The main change is that instead of passing around triples
  of (IP, SP, BP) values, a new structure 'D3UnwindRegs' is
  passed around instead.  This is defined differently for IA and
  ARM and succeeds in hiding at least some of the differences
  where we don't care about them.

  Note also, D3UnwindRegs duplicates, in purpose and structure,
  structure 'RegSummary' in priv_d3basics.h.  This will be tidied
  up in due course.

This commit almost certainly breaks stack unwinding on amd64-linux.

ee70926b34 Various improvements to DWARF handling to cope with changes in recent
versions of gcc as shipped with Fedora 12. Specific changes include:

  - Vastly increase the number of opcodes we understand how to
    evaluate when processing a location expression.

  - Process frame unwind data from the debug_frame ELF section as
    well as the eh_frame section.

  - Handle version 3 CIEs in frame unwind data.

  - Handle the compact form of DW_AT_data_member_location which just
    gives a constant offset from the start of it's base type instead
    of a full location expression.

Based on patches from Jakub Jelinek on bugs #210479 and #210566.

00d987f91a Add support for ELF indirect functions. These are symbols of
type STT_GNU_IFUNC which, instead of pointing directly at the
function, point at a routine which will return the address of
the real function. Redirection of indirect functions is handled
by valgrind as follows:

  - When a redirection specification matches an indirect
    function symbol an active redirection is added in the
    normal way, but with the isIFunc flag set.

  - When a call is made to an address which matches an
    active redirection with the isIFunc flag set the call
    is redirected, but not to the target address of the
    redirection - instead it is sent to a small wrapper
    routine that is preloaded into the client.

  - The wrapper routine calls the original client routine
    and collects the result, which it reports to valgrind
    using a client request, and then returns the result to
    the caller.

  - When valgrind gets the client request it looks up the
    active redirection for the indirect function and then
    adds a new active redirection which redirects from the
    address returned by the indirection function to the
    redirection target. This new redirection does not have
    the isIFunc flag set so behaves as a normal redirection.

In addition to the above we also add a few new redirections to
memcheck to capture internal calls made by glibc to things like
strlen, as these internal calls do not go through the indirect
function and instead go direct to the chosen implementation.

Based on a patch from Dodji Seketeli and comments from Jakub
Jelinek, this commit closes bug 206013.

5b1edb07f6 When generating XML output for suppressions, print the suppression
both wrapped up in XML tags (as before) but also in plain text in a
sequence of CDATA blocks.  Normally only one, but in the worst case
the raw data will have ]]> in it, in which case it needs to be split
across two CDATA blocks.

This apparently simple change involved a lot of refactoring of the
suppression printing machinery:

* in the core-tool iface, change "print_extra_suppression_info" (which
  prints any auxiliary info) to "get_extra_suppression_info", which
  parks the text in a caller-supplied buffer.  Adjust tools to match.

* VG_(apply_StackTrace): accept a void* argument, which is passed to
  each invokation of the functional parameter (a poor man's closure
  implementation).

* move PRINTF_CHECK into put_tool_basics.h, where it should have been
  all along

* move private printf-into-an-XArray-of-character functions from
  m_debuginfo into m_xarray, and make them public

* gen_suppression itself: use all the above changes.  Basically we
  always generate the plaintext version into an XArray.  In text mode
  that's just printed.  In XML mode, we print the XMLery as before,
  but the plaintext version is dumped into a CDATA block too.

* update the Protocol 4 specification to match all this.

This still isn't 100% right in the sense that the CDATA block data
needs to be split across multiple blocks if it should ever contain the
CDATA end mark "]]>".  The Protocol 4 spec has this right even though
the implementation currently doesn't.

Fixes #191189.

  most of the other list-searching functions do.

* rename all VG_(*seginfo*) functions exported from m_debuginfo to
  VG_(*DebugInfo*).  "seginfo" was a historical name which was mostly
  but not completely, done away with some time back.

e7dde85a24 Merge coregrind/ changes from branches/MESSAGING_TIDYUP r10464.
This commit tidies up and rationalises what could be called the
"messaging" system -- that part of V to do with presenting output to
the user.  In particular it brings significant improvements to XML
output.

Changes are:

* XML and normal text output now have separate file descriptors,
  which solves longstanding problems for XML consumers caused by
  the XML output getting polluted by unexpected non-XML output.

* This also means that we no longer have to hardwire all manner
  of output settings (verbosity, etc) when XML is requested.

* The XML output format has been revised, cleaned up, and made
  more suitable for use by error detecting tools in general
  (various Memcheck-specific features have been removed).  XML
  output is enabled for Ptrcheck and Helgrind, and Memcheck is
  updated to the new format.

* One side effect is that the behaviour of VG_(message) has been
  made to be consistent with printf: it no longer automatically
  adds a newline at the end of the output.  This means multiple
  calls to it can be used to build up a single line message; or a
  single call can write a multi-line message.  The ==pid==
  preamble is automatically inserted at each newline.

* VG_(message)(Vg_UserMsg, ..args..) now has the abbreviated form
  VG_(UMSG)(..args..); ditto VG_(DMSG) for Vg_DebugMsg and
  VG_(EMSG) for Vg_DebugExtraMsg.  A couple of other useful
  printf derivatives have been added to pub_tool_libcprint.h,
  most particularly VG_(vcbprintf).

* There's a small change in the core-tool interface to do with
  error handling: VG_(needs_tool_errors) has a new method
  void (*before_pp_Error)(Error* err)  which, if non-NULL, is
  called just before  void (*pp_Error)(Error* err).  This is to
  give tools the chance to look at errors before any part of them
  is printed, so they can print any XML preamble they like.

* coregrind/m_errormgr.c has been overhauled and cleaned up, and
  is a bit simpler and more commented.  In particular pp_Error
  and VG_(maybe_record_error) are significantly changed.

The diff is huge, but mostly very boring.  Most of the changes
are of the form

-   VG_(message)(Vg_UserMsg, "this is a message %d", n);
+   VG_(message)(Vg_UserMsg, "this is a message %d\n", n);

Unfortunately as a result of this, it touches a large number
of source files.

b05a2a18d7 This commit merges the BUILD_TWEAKS branch onto the trunk. It has the
following improvements:

- Arch/OS/platform-specific files are now included/excluded via the
  preprocessor, rather than via the build system.  This is more consistent
  (we use the pre-processor for small arch/OS/platform-specific chunks
  within files) and makes the build system much simpler, as the sources for
  all programs are the same on all platforms.

- Vast amounts of cut+paste Makefile.am code has been factored out.  If a
  new platform is implemented, you need to add 11 extra Makefile.am lines.
  Previously it was over 100 lines.

- Vex has been autotoolised.  Dependency checking now works in Vex (no more
  incomplete builds).  Parallel builds now also work.  --with-vex no longer
  works;  it's little use and a pain to support.  VEX/Makefile is still in
  the Vex repository and gets overwritten at configure-time;  it should
  probably be renamed Makefile-gcc to avoid possible problems, such as
  accidentally committing a generated Makefile.  There's a bunch of hacky
  copying to deal with the fact that autotools don't handle same-named files
  in different directories.  Julian plans to rename the files to avoid this
  problem.

- Various small Makefile.am things have been made more standard automake
  style, eg. the use of pkginclude/pkglib prefixes instead of rolling our
  own.

- The existing five top-level Makefile.am include files have been
  consolidated into three.

- Most Makefile.am files now are structured more clearly, with comment
  headers separating sections, declarations relating to the same things next
  to each other, better spacing and layout, etc.

- Removed the unused exp-ptrcheck/tests/x86 directory.

- Renamed some XML files.

- Factored out some duplicated dSYM handling code.

- Split auxprogs/ into auxprogs/ and mpi/, which allowed the resulting
  Makefile.am files to be much more standard.

- Cleaned up m_coredump by merging a bunch of files that had been
  overzealously separated.

The net result is 630 fewer lines of Makefile.am code, or 897 if you exclude
the added Makefile.vex.am, or 997 once the hacky file copying for Vex is
removed.  And the build system is much simpler.

07045477ca Merge the DARWIN branch onto the trunk.
I tried using 'svn merge' to do the merge but it did a terrible job and
there were bazillions of conflicts.  So instead I just took the diff between
the branch and trunk  at r10155, applied the diff to the trunk, 'svn add'ed
the added files (no files needed to be 'svn remove'd) and committed.

779bbb61c6 Add support for reading Windows PDB debug info (symbols and line
numbers) when Valgrind is running Wine.  Modified version of a
patch by John Reiser (vgsvn+wine-load-pdb-debuginfo.patch) with
extensions to read a second format of line number tables.

Wine uses a new client request, VG_USERREQ__LOAD_PDB_DEBUGINFO,
to tell Valgrind when to read PDB info.  Wine's implementation
of module loading is vastly different from that used by
ld-linux.so, and it is too difficult to recognize what is going
on just by observing the calls to mmap and mprotect.

01a6838e61 Cleaned up the demangling mess:
- Now more clearly distinguishing between C++-demangling, Z-demangling, and
  below-main renaming, particularly in 'get_sym_name'.
  
- --demangle=no no longer prevents Z-demangling, which makes more sense,
  although it's unlikely to affect anyone.

- Broke the circular dependency between m_demangle and m_debuginfo by moving
  below-main renaming into m_debuginfo.

- Renamed some get_fnname_* functions to make their effect clearer, and
  improved their comments.

a8c9970a34 Cleaned up the mess that was the treatment of "below main" functions such as
'__libc_start_main', in Massif, m_debuginfo and m_stacktrace.  As part of
this, --show-below-main is now visible to tools, and Massif pays attention
to it.

Improved the description of --show-below-main=yes in the manual.

Replaced some instances of "__libc_start_main" in the test *.exp files with
"(below main)", which is what will actually be seen.  Also updated
scalar.stderr.exp*, which should make it get closer to actually passing.

search_all_loctabs, VG_(get_objname), VG_(find_seginfo): augment tests
"di->text_present" with "&& di->text_size > 0" (probably not
necessary, but is clearer, and more consistent in that most places
that look at DebugInfo.text_{size,avma} first perform both of those
tests).

5ad1dd61f9 Introduce a new type, PtrdiffT. Replace lots of uses of OffT (all those
that are memory offsets) with PtrdiffT;  OffT should only be used for file
sizes and offsets.

Change Off64T from a ULong to a Long, as it should be.  Replace some uses
of ULong in the address space manager with Off64T to match.

Also add a comment explaining the meanings of the basic types like Addr,
OffT, SizeT, etc.

Also fix the prototype for VG_(pread) -- the last arg is an OffT, not an
Int.

ba2ece03b8 This commit subtly changes the meaning of the values obtained via the
stack unwind mechanism (the function VG_(record_ExeContext) et al),
clears up some associated kludges, and makes suppression matching work
more reliably.

Prior to this commit, a stack snapshot contained, at [0], the IP of
the relevant thread, and at all positions [1] and above, the return
addresses for the open calls.

When showing a snapshot to the user (in VG_(apply_StackTrace)), and
searching the stack for stack blocks (in VG_(get_data_description)), 1
is subtracted from positions [1] and above, so as to move these return
addresses back to the last byte of the calling instruction.  This
subtraction is also done even in VG_(get_StackTrace_wrk) itself, in
order to make the stack unwinding work at all.

It turns out that suppression-vs-function-name matching requires the
same hack, and sometimes failed to match suppressions that should
match, because of this self-same problem.

So the commit changes the stack unwinder itself, so that entries [1]
and above point to the last byte of the call instruction, rather than
the return address.  The associated kludges in VG_(apply_StackTrace)
and VG_(get_StackTrace_wrk) are removed, and suppression matching is
observed to work in a case where it failed before.

09dac86eca Add a new module, m_seqmatch, which does very simple sequence (regexp)
matching, in the function VG_(generic_match).  Patterns to be matched
against may contain only '*'-style wildcards (matches any number of
elements, we don't care what they are), '?' wildcards (matches exactly
one element, we don't care what it is) and literal elements.

It is totally abstractified, in the sense that the pattern and input
arrays may be arrays of anything.  The caller provides enough
information so that VG_(generic_match) can step along both arrays, and
can ask the questions "is this pattern element a '*' ?", "is this
pattern element a '?' ?", and "does this pattern element match an
input element ?".

The existing function VG_(string_match) is reimplemented using
VG_(generic_match), although the ability to escape metacharacters in
the pattern string is removed -- I don't think it was ever used.

In m_errormgr, matching of suppression stacks (including wildcard
"..." lines) against error stacks is re-implemented using
VG_(generic_match).

Further detailed comments are in m_seqmatch.h and pub_tool_seqmatch.h.

A negative side effect is that VG_(string_match) will be much slower
than before, due to the abstractification.  It may be necessary to
reimplement a specialised version later.

cf588ba40d When trying to establish whether or not debuginfo should be read from
a file, first the mapping permissions _before_ peering at the file's
header, rather than afterwards.  This changes the logic to behave more
like it does in 3.3.x.  Fixes #164669, although really it is all still
rather fragile.  The bug report,

explanation.

1eceb4282b Dwarf3 variable & type reader: use 64-bit numbers throughout to
represent the sizes of types, even on 32-bit hosts, where a type with
a size >= 2^32 is, well, if not meaningless, then at least impossible
to instantiate.  This is of course motivated by reality .. on ppc32
SUSE11.0, the debuginfo for glibc-2.8 appears to contain a declaration
amounting to

  char __EH_FRAME_BEGIN__ [4294967296]

Really.

335992d8fc Merge all remaining changes from branches/PTRCHECK. These are some
relatively minor extensions to m_debuginfo, a major overhaul of
m_debuginfo/readdwarf3.c to get its space usage under control, and
changes throughout the system to enable heap-use profiling.

The majority of the merged changes were committed into
branches/PTRCHECK as the following revs: 8591 8595 8598 8599 8601 and
8161.

e5150447d7 Presently, Valgrind (non-client) code that wants to use the stat
family of syscalls is impossible to write in a way that's portable and
correct.  On some targets (eg x86-linux) you need to do sys_stat64 and
receive the results in a 'struct vki_stat64'.  But on other targets
(eg amd64-linux) neither sys_stat64 nor 'struct vki_stat64' exist.

This commit adds a new type, 'struct vg_stat', which contains 64 bit
fields in all the right places, and makes VG_(stat) and VG_(fstat) use
it.  This means callers to the two functions no longer need to worry
about the is-it-64-bit-clean-or-not question, since these routines
reformat the received data into a'struct vg_stat'.  Kind of like what
glibc must have been doing for decades.

This (indirectly) fixes a bug on x86-linux, in which m_debuginfo would
sometimes fail to read debug info, due to VG_(di_notify_mmap) using
VG_(stat) (hence sys_stat) on the file, which failed, and when in fact
it should have used sys_stat64.  Bug reported and tracked down by
Marc-Oliver Straub.

109d597941 Bug fixes (not in bugzilla):
- Make sure that Valgrind does not complain when it tries to read the
  debug information of a file of size zero when such a file is mmap()'ed
  into memory.
- Make sure the filename is included in the error message that is
  printed when reading the debug information fails for a file that is mmap()'ed
  into memory.
- Fixed assertion failure that was triggered by supplying an output
  buffer to VG_(seginfo_sect_kind)() that is smaller than the filename
  to be copied into that buffer.

4cae5c3ed5 Merge branches/OTRACK_BY_INSTRUMENTATION into the trunk. This adds
support to Memcheck for tracking the origin of uninitialised values,
if you use the --track-origins=yes flag.

This currently causes some Memcheck regression tests to fail, because
they now print an extra line of advisory text in their output.  This
will be fixed.

The core-tool interface is slightly changed.  The version number for
the interface needs to be incremented.

8c1638a9ed Don't tell m_redir (and the user) that debuginfo is about to be
discarded if in fact we never got as far as reading anything into
DebugInfo.  This unbreaks self-hosting.

b67822d578 If we don't find the address in the segInfo list that ask the address
space manager for the name of the file it was mapped from as a fallback
solution.

This allows us to print the names of exe/dll files in the stack trace
when running programs under wine.

06214b0c46 Back out r7210 ("Fix completely bogus implementation of
VG_(seginfo_sect_kind).") as it breaks DRD and possible Callgrind.

The segment kind identification code is basically broken for non-text
segments, but requires fixing at a higher level than this.  See
discussion on valgrind-developers, 20 March 07, "Bug in
VG_(seginfo_sect_kind) ?"
